“Nature is pleased with simplicity. And nature is no dummy.”

― Isaac Newton ―

  • His scientific work, however, has undoubtedly had a massive impact on our understanding of the world around us. I therefore feel quite privileged to call him a “celebrity witness” in my case for simplicity.

When we have trouble dealing with overly complex issues in life, the best suggestion is often to break the issue down into smaller components which can be understood and managed more easily. In our search for balance and inner peace, our minds naturally gravitate towards simplicity, intuitively excluding or masking everything that we perceive as “noise,” as elements that overwhelm our senses and distract our focus.

I would argue that the deeply satisfying feeling of enjoying something very simple is at the core of our quest for, well, happiness. Being in the moment without being distracted by disturbing memories or worries of the future.

These simple joys can be anything really. It can be a glass of wine at sunset. The sound of a blackbird singing at dusk. The trusting warmth of your cat curled up on your lap. Or the simple beauty of a bunch of trees on a snow white canvas... Feel free to expand the list as desired. All of the above perfectly resonate with me, and they all have one thing in common: Simplicity is king. Or queen. Very well put, Mr. Newton! Nature really is no dummy...
